Russia tries to push through a compromise with its ally Iran..then backs away

The news this morning was all about Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov trumpeting the wonderful compromise he had made with Iran over its nukes program. Hey,he said, let's allow the mullahs to continue their atomic research if they let Russia do most of the uranium enrichment...just let Iran enrich a little bit for itself, just to be nice, OK?

Well, that fell through pretty quickly, after Lavrov had a conversation with Condi Rice and the other members of the EU3 (Britain, France and Germany).

At this point, The United States and the European Union want Iran to shelve all its work to enrich uranium because of the persistent pattern of, shall we say, dissembling about its nuclear program.

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney said on Tuesday that Iran would be stopped from getting atomic bombs and faced "meaningful consequences" if it persists in defying calls to stop nuclear work which could lead to weapons.

Lavrov backed off quickly, denying that he had made a new proposal to defuse the crisis over Iran's nuclear program.VOA News - Lavrov Denies Russian Nuclear Compromise Offer to Iran

"There is no compromise new proposal," Lavrov said at a news conference with Rice, who added: "The Russians did not tell us of any new proposal ..." Uh huh. Right.

So much for that trial balloon.

It remains to be seen whether the UN Security Council is prepared to adopt sanctions against Iran and whether those sanctions would be meaningful.

Russia takes all these initiatives upon itself and doesn't really know how to handle things.
They were told off by the Hamas thugs and now Iranians ..
Oh it's so hard to be relevant.

They are merely trying to save their own skins by allying themselves with Islamic facism.
