Watcher's Council Nominations, 9/10/11

Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one of their own and one from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council.

A full list of entries, including the non-Council ones can be found here.

Council News: There’s a spot available on the Watcher’s Council. If you have a blog of your own and feel you measure up, you're welcome to find out what's involved and apply here. Or you can leave a comment in the comments section on this post.

So, let's see what we have this week...

1.Joshua Pundit - The Game Changer - Duty, Honor, Country - With Sarah Palin's throwing down what amounted to a rhetorical shot over the bow, the entire election has become redefined in startling clarity. Not only Palin's electricity but John McCain's underated address to the convention signified a revolutionary change in direction for the GOP, and I'm amazed that most of the chattering classes missed it.

Now it truly is about change, or more exactly a kinky version of back to the future. Which future will we pick?

2.The Glittering Eye - Waiting for the Takeover (Updated) - Dave Schuler takes a comprehensive look at the Fannie/Freddie takeover, which, as he shows us, is the most significant business story of recent history. Here's more cheerful news on another debacle in the making: for months now, the US government has been transferring subprime home loans given to people with marginal credit and next to zero equity in their properties from the private sector to the already laden shoulders of the US taxpayer via the FHA, which unlike Fannie/Freddie is a fully governmental agency . It remains to be seen what a new administration will do to deal with Fannie/Freddie as well as this under the wire mess.

3. Soccer Dad - An exceptional choice - Soccer Dad outlines the case for John McCain and the choice of Sarah Palin for the vice presidential slot.

4. Bookworm Room - Beneath the Gobbledy-gook, an implied concession about taxes - Leave it to Ms. Bookworm to notice what most did not...Barack Hussein Obama's apparent reversal on his `soak the rich' (meaning the middle class) tax policies. Given his past record of veracity, I wouldn't assume this is anything more than electoral posturing, especially sice a President Obama would be under extreme pressure from his supporters to make good on the gimmees he's been promising them in the name of hope n'change.

5. The Razor - Dems Proving the GOP is really… -Scott sees a more fun loving GOP emerging. I think he's right, but I don't see that as the antithesis of social conservatism so much as the comparison of common sense to nonsense.

6. Wolf Howling - Standing At The Crossroads - Identity Politics, Multiculturalism & The Melting Pot - This week, the Wolf gives his take on the history of the GOP and the Democratic party vis a vis race and the role of racial and gender politics in the current campaign.

7. The Colossus of Rhodey - Is the Philly Daily News Literally Going Nuts?” - Hube asks the question in view of the latest offerings by his local paper's columnists, and skewers a particularly odious example dealing with Bristol Palin's pregnancy and comparing it to slavery, believe it or not.

8. Rhymes With Right - A Bad Political Dad From History? - Greg looks at the Democrat argument that Sarah Palin is a bad parent for 'abandoning' her five kids to run for high office and compares her to a father with ten children who previously ran for president to showcase the fallacy of this argument.

Not that it means anything to the Angry Left when there's political profit to be had.

I think there's something else going on here as well. Given sociological and demographic trends, I would not be surprised to find that there's a huge difference in the percentage of people on the Left who grew up in traditional nuclear familes, let alone families with siblings as opposed to conservatives. Many of the people making the 'bad parent' argument therefore simply don't understand the concept of a two parent familial team, augmented by relatives...and in the case of a prominent politician, by staffers and professional help. I mean, would you have a problem having the Secret Service driving your kids to school or to a dance class? Where do I sign up!

9. Cheat-Seeking Missiles - Fight, Fight, Fight - Like my piece, Laer's offering this week looks at John McCain's acceptance speech and worries that its aggressive tone will scare independents. .

10. Hillbilly White Trash - The new Reagan - Lemuel makes his welcome return to the Council after an absence and offers a view of Sarah Palin that was echoed by Reagan's son Michael among others, who's latest column was entitled 'Welcome Back, Dad.'
